Why “Free Will” Can’t Override God’s Sovereign Plan

I recently came across an idea that I hadn't considered before: if man truly had “free will,” what are the chances that God’s predetermined, sovereign plans would ever come to pass?

Think about it.

Cyrus the Pagan King and God’s Plan

The prophet Isaiah, writing more than 150 years before Cyrus of Persia ever came to power, declared—under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—that this very king would one day set the Jewish people free from Babylonian captivity.

Fast forward. Babylon is conquered by King Cyrus, a pagan ruler. Daniel shows him the scrolls of Isaiah. Cyrus reads the prophecy and sees his own name written there.

Now pause for a second. If Cyrus had absolute “free will,” couldn’t he have just shrugged and said, “Nope. I’m keeping these people as my slaves”?

But he didn’t.

Isaiah 45:1 records God’s words:

“Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed.”

That phrase—“whose right hand I have grasped”—is key. Commentaries explain it as a picture of God’s divine empowerment and direction. Cyrus may have been pagan, but he was God’s instrument. An “anointed” vessel, not because of his holiness, but because of God’s sovereignty.

Stirred by the Lord

2 Chronicles 36:22 confirms it:

“Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia...”

Cyrus wasn’t acting on his own free will. His spirit was stirred. His steps were directed. He was carrying out a plan written long before he was ever born.

The Pattern of Sovereignty

This isn’t just about Cyrus. Scripture is filled with examples of God bending the hearts of men—kings, rulers, even traitors—toward His divine will.

  • Pharaoh released the Hebrews because God decreed it.

  • Judas betrayed Jesus because prophecy demanded it.

  • Cyrus freed the Jews because God had already written it into history.

Proverbs 21:1 sums it up perfectly:

“The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He will.”

No Such Thing as a “Maverick Molecule”

Everything—absolutely everything—is under God’s sovereign control. R.C. Sproul once said that there is not one molecule in existence on this planet or in the universe that acts apart from God’s divine power.

Sproul called them “maverick molecules”—and he insisted they simply do not exist.

God's Sovereignty in Today’s World

Look at the headlines. Look at the conflict in the Middle East. Look at the nations aligning for or against Israel. Prophecy isn’t hidden in some dusty scroll—it’s unfolding right in front of our eyes.

And just as He did with Pharaoh, Judas, and Cyrus, God can (and will) use anyone—believer, pagan, or enemy—to carry out His decreed plans.

Which leaves us with the truth: man’s so-called “free will” doesn’t thwart God’s sovereignty. It never has, and it never will.
