NAMES OF GOD - ELOHIM

ELOHIM - Most common name for God.  It was first used in Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God (Elohim in Hebrew) created the heavens and the earth," and 31 more times in that chapter alone.  It's used a total of 2,570 times in the Old Testament.

It means One who is:
Supreme Judge
All Powerful
Infinite
Transcendent

Elohim is grammatically plural in form but doesn't imply polytheism (multiple gods).  The Shema found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 plainly states that the LORD God is One:

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

I've often wondered if Elohim could refer to the Trinitarian Doctrine, but that's not something I've read or heard someone with more biblical/theological knowledge than I have speak about, but it does say in Genesis 1:26 "let us make man in our image", so we know that God is referring to the three members of the Godhead.
